The easiest way is to fold back the excess canvas, line up the holes with the pattern, and put the yarn thread through both holes. I would recommend no more than an inch or so of excess pattern (about 6 rows) all the way around. At the corners you can cut the canvas to make the overlap even. Most kit instructions includes this method.
